ELIZABETH WONG

19 February 2009

Dear friends,

I have departed today.

Despite having tendered my resignation from all posts, the media and websites continue to intrude into my private life and privacy. I have been informed by several media that they will continue to publish even more lewd graphical, sensational stories of my private life. I have also been told there will be a fresh assault, with more photographs and videos released and circulated in order to completely degrade and bury me.

This is the darkest episode in my life. I have never felt so alone, vulnerable and humiliated. I need to rest and to search for peace of mind to get away from the stormy events surrounding me.

I appreciate the overwhelming support from all quarters, especially my voters, women in particular and party comrades. Words cannot express my gratitude for your gentle kindness.

I have informed my party leaders that I am determined to relinquish all my positions, as a Selangor State Exco Member as well as the State Assemblywoman for Bukit Lanjan. I am thankful for the party leadership’s concern and encouragement. I seek their understanding for my predicament.

My commitment to the ideals of the Parti Keadilan Rakyat remains unwavering. I shall retain my party membership and continue to struggle for a just society with the party.

The nation is at a crisis facing a serious economic recession. Unemployment is rising, while corruption remains rampant. I wish public discussions would concentrate on these important issues rather than analysing my private life. My principle remains the same ?

I will not answer any questions pertaining to my private life. My private life is not for public scrutiny as I have not broken any law or caused harm to anyone.

I plead to the media as well as my supporters to allow me some peace of mind, and to give me space. I urge the media to leave my family, friends and I alone. Please do not continue to shame my family and I, so that we have a chance to lead a normal life as ordinary citizens.

Lastly, I wish to thank the support from the public that has been pouring in ceaselessly. I am very moved and eternally grateful to my friends and colleagues who stand by me. There is nothing in this world that can repay your kindness.

“Kadar pengangguran semakin meningkat, manakala rasuah masih meluas.

Kenyataan Media: Politik Murahan

Kenyataan Media Ketua Wanita Selangor

Politik murahan mesti ditolak

Anwar’s Press Statement On Elizabeth Wong

The last few days must have been trying and stressful for her and her family. We hope the mass media will give her the breathing space she deserves. I refer to the statement released by our Elizabeth Wong today wherein she has offered her resignation as State Executive Councillor and Bukit Lanjan Assemblywoman. I can only use the strongest possible terms to condemn the smear tactics used against her. One can only wonder to what depths the people behind this will stoop to achieve their aims. Elizabeth Wong has spoken at length to Azizah and me. We have discussed the issues and we understand her reasons and the decision she has taken.

Comforting words from Soi Lek to Eli

By Shannon Teoh,  Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — Selangor state executive council member Elizabeth Wong has the support of MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek who himself knows what it is like to become embroiled in scandal.

The former health minister today expressed his sympathy to Wong after the circulation of her naked photographs led to her offer to quit as a state legislator and from the state government.

“I can understand what Wong has been going through in the last 48 hours,” he said in a statement.

Just over a year ago, Dr Chua was forced to resign from all political posts after he admitted to being the man in a sex DVD that was being circulated to his constituents in Johor.

But in October, he made a sensational comeback in the MCA party polls when he won the party’s No 2 post.

When contacted by The Malaysian Insider yesterday, Dr Chua said he would prefer to wait for the situation to be clearer before commenting due to the sensitivity of his own position.

Today, he applauded her move to offer her resignation from the executive council as well as state assembly, in a move that would mirror his own.

“I can only say that she has my sympathy and support. I feel that she has done the right thing by offering to resign and I fully agree that everyone has the right to privacy,” he said.

“Wong must stay strong and be brave to face the storm. This is not the end of the world,” he said.

He added that her determination, honesty and hard work was what would earn her support and recognition at the end of the day.

Meanwhile, maverick PKR Kulim MP Zulkifli Noordin condemned the violation of Elizabeth’s privacy but commended her for offering to resign as it proved she valued morality as a criteria for leadership.

Saying Islam abhorred such invasion of privacy, Zulkifli wrote in his blog, “I am worried that this has become a trend in politics that such exposures is a shortcut to topple someone.”

“Now, even our privacy cannot be assured. Even sleeping in our bedroom is not safe as Elizabeth, Datuk Chua Soi Lek and D.P. Vijandran and others have gone through,” he said, adding the people will have to reflect on the country’s direction with the current political culture.

According to a Bernama report, Pas too lauded Wong’s decision. Its Vice-president Datuk Husam Musa felt it was an act of a highly principled person.

“Pakatan Rakyat has its own moral standard which must be adhered to and I consider the move by the Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman as a principled and moral act,” he told reporters at his office, here today.

It was reported that Wong, 37, who is the chairman of the Selangor State Committee on Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment, would discuss her resignation with Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

Commenting on the issue, Husam said Pas sympathised with Wong and described the individual who had posted her photograph on the internet as someone who was immoral.

Asked whether the issue would affect Pas and the coalition between the party, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Husam said it would have no effect at all on the coalition as what transpired was something unexpected.

He said the efforts by certain elements to discredit the coalition was also something positive as it enabled the coalition to correct whatever weaknesses they had.

MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai however was puzzled by Wong’s offer to step down as she had said she was not guilty and maintained that she had been framed.

“If she is innocent and had been framed, why should she resign? Let the police investigate first,” Liow, who is also the Health Minister, told reporters after visiting the Pokok Sena Health Clinic, about 30 kilometres from Alor Setar.

He also called on the people not to speculate on the case, including linking it to a political agenda of certain parties as there were numerous possibilities on the matter.

PRESS RELEASE

17 Februari 2009

Thr events of the past two days have shown an insidious shown an insidious and underhanded attempt by certain quarters to smear my reputation. My personal life and privacy have been violated.

These people have conspired to undermine my credibility both as a Selangor State Exco member as well as a KeADILan leader. Although the smear campaign directed towards me has caused me a lot of anguish, I am aware that the real objective is to discredit Parti Keadilan rakyat

I have done nothing wrong.

I wish to state that I am not ashamded of my sexuality as a woman and as a single person.   I have broken no law.   I stand by the fundamental principle in a democracy that everyone has a right to privacy.

Parti KeADILan Rakyat stands for ‘new’ politics that holds justice and human rights as core values which transcend gnder, ethnicity and class. ‘New’ politics also means we rise above gutter politics.

It is precisely this that I believe that these attacks will continue with greater intensity, and I have no doubt that Umno and Barisan Nasional will continue with greater intensity, and I have no doubt that Umno and Barisan Nasional will continue to manipulte the situation.   Accordingly, I have decided to make a stand, in the interest of the party and its struggle for the people.

I have received overwhelming support from my family, my constituents, Pakatan Rakyat collegues, friends and the general public.   However, in the interest of the party, I have decided to offer my resignation as a Selangor State Exco Member as well as the State Assemblywoman for Bukit Lanjan.

I will discuss with the Menteri Besar to arrange for the proper handover of my responsibilities.   I will continue to serve the people and fight for justice in Malaysia.

Last but not least, I am very grateful to the people who have placed their trust in me and my party, and I thank them for the opportunity that they have given me to serve.   Words cannot possibly express my eternal gratitude to outstanding staff members and fellow ADUNS, and most of all, My Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim who has given me his unwavering support and the opportunity to work with him.

If I have let anyone down or offended anyone, I offer my sincere apologies.
