Hot rhetoric and Pakatan-bashing

Syed Jaymal Zahiid | Mar 25, 09 8:24pm
That time of the year, where folks dressed in white baju Melayu, red samping and songkoks congregating at the Tun Hussein Onn Hall in PWTC in their thousands and passionately indulging in verbal trashing of the opposition political parties, has arrived.

MCPX

umno 59 agm 2009 puteri youth wanita mt campaign 250309 01It is the ‘Umno season’, where in each of the 59 years the party has convened its annual general assembly, the tradition is to begin with waves of oral shelling fired from the trenches of the party’s Youth wing.

This year is no exception when delegates of the Youth wing kicked off the debate session with scathing attacks, often with racial overtones, against Pakatan Rakyat leaders.

One delegate from Johor, Rohazam Shah, blasted Pakatan leaders, chiefly PKR leader Anwar Ibrahim, as arrogant after the coalition had taken over five states and denied BN the two-third parliamentary majority in the last general elections.

anwar ibrahim 02 060207Anwar was also labelled a traitor to the Malays by Rohazam when he argued that a leader who tries to question Malay special privileges should be described as enemy number one to the race.

“He tried to abolish the Malay rights that is enshrined in the Federal Constitution when he suggested to do away with the New Economic Policy,” said Rohazam and it was followed by thunderous applause from the audience.

For him, no one and certainly not non-Malays, can question the special Malay rights and call for Umno and the Youth wing to fight to the end to defend such privileges.

Pakatan had insulted the MalaysHe also blasted Pakatan for the Perak constitutional crisis and said that the opposition coalition had tested the patience and insulted the Malays when they question the sultan’s decision to appoint Zambry Abdul Kadir as the new menteri besar.

umno agm 250309 hishammuddin wield keris 02Rohazam’s offensive was then followed by fellow delegate, Mohd Zaidi Mohd Said from Penang, who accused the DAP government of Penang of being  racists.

“It is DAP that controls Penang and not Pakatan. There is no such thing as the Pakatan coalition in Penang,” said Zaidi, implying that the state is controlled by the Chinese and not a multi-racial coalition as claimed by the state’s Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

guan eng respond to ong tee keat 020209 02“You know what Guan Eng first did when he became chief minister? He had all the posters that you can see in state government buildings changed to Yang Berhormat Tuan Lim Guan Eng,” he added.

Zaidi said the term “tuan” or master in English was only used by the Malays when addressing English governors when Malaysia was colonialised by Britain.

He then said the resignation of Mohd Fairus reflected the inability of PKR to serve and protect the interest of the Malays in the state and called for his resignation not only as Penang’s deputy chief minister, but as the state representative as well.

After he was done with DAP, Zaidi shifted his attacks on PKR by ridiculing Anwar.

He said the Malays should not be fooled by the leader who is “only good at giving promises but not delivering.”

‘Biggest mistake was to free Anwar’

“He can promise you everything, he can even promise you the front and the back,” said Zaidi in an apparent insinuation to Anwar’s sodomy case.

“The biggest mistake we ever did was to free Anwar (from jail),” he added and was accompanied by stomps from the floor.

Kelantan delegate Mohd Affendi Yusof, when taking his turn to debate, said Umno has been very lenient and patient towards Pakatan’s antics.

nizar jamaluddin interview 250309 04He also touched on the Perak fiasco and blasted ousted Perak menteri besar Mohd Nizar Jamaluddin for his now legendary statement: “Mohon maaf tuanku, patek mohon derhaka.” (Your highness, forgive me for I plead to commit treason).

“In Islam, there is no forgiveness for those who commit treason against the sultan,” he said, claiming that the sultan is considered as God’s representative on earth.

“When he faces God, he will have no excuse when God asks him why he had committed treason against the sultan. He would not die as a man, but would die as a bangkai (rotten corpse),” he added.

Instigating the crowd, Affendi said now is not the time for Umno to be soft and patient, and said it was time the party uses force to crush its Pakatan rivals.

“We cannot be soft anymore. We must use force. And we will use it immediately after the annual general assembly ends,” he said.

KDN gantung akhbar PAS, PKR
Mar 23, 09 5:42pm

Batang Ai: A case for the beginning of a New Sarawak

PKR names Jawah Gerang for Batang Ai
Joseph Tawie | Mar 23, 09 10:39am malaysiakini.com

After a number of delays, the de facto leader of PKR Anwar Ibrahim today named the former member of parliament for Lubok Antu Jawah Gerang as its candidate for the Batang Ai by-election which is to be held on April 7.

Anwar was supposed to have announced the name of the candidate on arrival at the Kuching International Airport yesterday, but adjourned the announcement to today.

jawah gerang pkr batang ai state seatHe made the announcement at the Kuching airport just before leaving for Kuala Lumpur this morning.

Anwar told reporters that he decided on Jawah, 55, after gathering various views and feedback from several longhouse elders who came to meet him at Rumah Lepang, Sayat, Lubok Antu.

He said that he found that Jawah was not only the favourite choice to face Malcolm Mussen Lamoh of the Barisan Nasional, but also had every chance to win the seat for Pakatan Rakyat.

In introducing Jawah to the press, Anwar also appointed Nicholas Bawin as the director of operations for the by-election.

“I hope everybody will give their cooperation as PKR is confident in Jawah’s ability in solving the people’s problems and in looking after the interests of all communities in the state.

“I believe that with the strong partnership of Jawah and Nicholas, PKR can wrest the Batang Ai seat,” added Anwar.

Jawah meanwhile said that he would work hard to deliver the seat.

“I believe we can make a good start,” he said, referring to PKR’s planned assault on the state during the next state elections due to be held in the next two years.

A former banker with economics degree

Anwar also called on Bawin’s supporters to work together in order to ensure victory for the party and to fight BN’s cash-rich machinery.

Nicholas contested for the Batang Ai seat in the May 2006 state election and lost narrowly by 806 votes to incumbent, the late Dublin Unting Ingot.

He was hotly tipped to contest again for the seat but Anwar obviously had other ideas.

Also present at the press conference were DAP state assemblyperson for Pending Violet Yong and veteran DAP state leader Chong Siew Chiang.

batang air state seat 240209Jawah was the member of parliament for Lubok Antu for five terms. He is a graduate in economics from University of Malaya.

He worked with a bank in Kuching before being recruited by the now defunct Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak (PBDS) to contest the Lubok Antu parliamentary by-election in 1987. He was then returned unopposed in 1990 and 1995 elections.

This is Jawah’s first time contesting for a state seat. His opponent is Malcolm Mussen who was named last week by BN as its candidate.

Noted for his fiery speeches, Jawah has become something of a symbol or even an icon in Batang Ai for his courage in articulating Iban issues which did not endear him to the top leadership of the state BN.

The Batang Ai constituency which fell vacant following the death of Dublin Unting on Feb 24 is part of the Lubok Antu parliamentary constituency and it has about 8,000 voters. The other state constituency is Engkilili.

Masing confident of victory

malcolm mussenMeanwhile, state minister and Parti Rakyat Sarawak president James Masing said BN’s candidate for the by-election Malcolm Mussen was a good choice for the coalition as he had a better chance of winning the seat, and with a bigger majority.

Malcolm Mussen (photo) was nominated by Masing’s PRS.

“We will still fight. For me, two-cornered or three-cornered, it does not make any difference.

“I am confident that BN will win with a bigger majority,” he said after having dialogue with the people of Rumah Jumat.

Masing is the BN director of operations for the by-election.

Politik murahan mesti ditolak

Anwar’s Press Statement On Elizabeth Wong

The last few days must have been trying and stressful for her and her family. We hope the mass media will give her the breathing space she deserves. I refer to the statement released by our Elizabeth Wong today wherein she has offered her resignation as State Executive Councillor and Bukit Lanjan Assemblywoman. I can only use the strongest possible terms to condemn the smear tactics used against her. One can only wonder to what depths the people behind this will stoop to achieve their aims. Elizabeth Wong has spoken at length to Azizah and me. We have discussed the issues and we understand her reasons and the decision she has taken.

Comforting words from Soi Lek to Eli

By Shannon Teoh,  Malaysian Insider

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 17 — Selangor state executive council member Elizabeth Wong has the support of MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek who himself knows what it is like to become embroiled in scandal.

The former health minister today expressed his sympathy to Wong after the circulation of her naked photographs led to her offer to quit as a state legislator and from the state government.

“I can understand what Wong has been going through in the last 48 hours,” he said in a statement.

Just over a year ago, Dr Chua was forced to resign from all political posts after he admitted to being the man in a sex DVD that was being circulated to his constituents in Johor.

But in October, he made a sensational comeback in the MCA party polls when he won the party’s No 2 post.

When contacted by The Malaysian Insider yesterday, Dr Chua said he would prefer to wait for the situation to be clearer before commenting due to the sensitivity of his own position.

Today, he applauded her move to offer her resignation from the executive council as well as state assembly, in a move that would mirror his own.

“I can only say that she has my sympathy and support. I feel that she has done the right thing by offering to resign and I fully agree that everyone has the right to privacy,” he said.

“Wong must stay strong and be brave to face the storm. This is not the end of the world,” he said.

He added that her determination, honesty and hard work was what would earn her support and recognition at the end of the day.

Meanwhile, maverick PKR Kulim MP Zulkifli Noordin condemned the violation of Elizabeth’s privacy but commended her for offering to resign as it proved she valued morality as a criteria for leadership.

Saying Islam abhorred such invasion of privacy, Zulkifli wrote in his blog, “I am worried that this has become a trend in politics that such exposures is a shortcut to topple someone.”

“Now, even our privacy cannot be assured. Even sleeping in our bedroom is not safe as Elizabeth, Datuk Chua Soi Lek and D.P. Vijandran and others have gone through,” he said, adding the people will have to reflect on the country’s direction with the current political culture.

According to a Bernama report, Pas too lauded Wong’s decision. Its Vice-president Datuk Husam Musa felt it was an act of a highly principled person.

“Pakatan Rakyat has its own moral standard which must be adhered to and I consider the move by the Bukit Lanjan assemblywoman as a principled and moral act,” he told reporters at his office, here today.

It was reported that Wong, 37, who is the chairman of the Selangor State Committee on Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment, would discuss her resignation with Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim.

Commenting on the issue, Husam said Pas sympathised with Wong and described the individual who had posted her photograph on the internet as someone who was immoral.

Asked whether the issue would affect Pas and the coalition between the party, DAP and Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), Husam said it would have no effect at all on the coalition as what transpired was something unexpected.

He said the efforts by certain elements to discredit the coalition was also something positive as it enabled the coalition to correct whatever weaknesses they had.

MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai however was puzzled by Wong’s offer to step down as she had said she was not guilty and maintained that she had been framed.

“If she is innocent and had been framed, why should she resign? Let the police investigate first,” Liow, who is also the Health Minister, told reporters after visiting the Pokok Sena Health Clinic, about 30 kilometres from Alor Setar.

He also called on the people not to speculate on the case, including linking it to a political agenda of certain parties as there were numerous possibilities on the matter.
